Product Description

IN STOCK! ORDER NOW FOR THE HOLIDAYS - This item sells out every year!

LaBefana The Italian Christmas Witch Doll measures approximately 20 inches tall and unlike most of the other witches, she is standing. She is dressed in Italian basic black - a velvet blouse with bell shaped sleeves, black cotton skirt decorated with with black lace trimmings and black cotton apron. Her gauze double skirt is black, with matching scarf and also, the hemp shawl to keep her warm. The pointy black satin hat with a golden buckle matches as well and it is decorated with a large black feather.

She is holding a lantern to show her the way. She is a beautiful porcelain figure with ample nose, large brown eyes, purple lipstick and bicycle glasses.

LaBefana comes with a little story card that tells about her: In Italy, the Christmas holiday season lasts through Jan. 6 - the Epiphany, and on that day La Befana , known to some as the Christmas witch, brings goodies to all of Italy's children. Children hang stockings on the side of their beds, and the next morning the stockings are filled with trinkets and sweets. Legend has it that La Befana was an old Italian grandma-type happily cleaning her house when three men showed up at her door claiming that they were searching for baby Jesus, the newborn king. She was skeptical and shooed them away. After a little while, she had second thoughts as she considered that maybe the men were telling the truth. If so, she decided she should try to catch up with them. But they were long gone. So instead, she handed out gifts to all of the children in the neighborhood in the hopes that one of them was the child Jesus. Every year she goes to look for the three wise men - and most importantly baby Jesus. When she does, she leaves little surprises for the little Italian girls and boys. Many people go from house to house visiting one another after opening La Befana's gifts in the morning.

You can start your own La Befana traditions. Just leave out your old socks or shoes for her to fill on Jan. 5 - and believe!
